What Does “Tsechen Tara” Mean?

The story behind our name and the values that guide everything we do.

A name can tell a story.

For us, Tsechen Tara Trust is far more than the name of a charity. It represents our purpose, our inspiration and the values we hope to share with the world.

Every word was chosen with care.

Together, they express a simple yet powerful vision: Great Compassion in Action.

What Does Tsechen Mean?

Tsechen (ཚེ་ཆེན་) is a Tibetan word that means Great Compassion.

Compassion is one of the central teachings of Buddhism. It is more than feeling sympathy for others. It is recognising suffering and responding with kindness, generosity and practical action.

For us, the word Tsechen serves as a daily reminder that genuine compassion should not remain an idea. It should become something we live.

It inspires us to help where we can, support those in need and create opportunities for others to flourish.

Who Is Tara?

Tara is one of the most beloved figures in Tibetan Buddhism.

She is a fully enlightened Buddha who embodies wisdom, compassion and fearless action. Throughout the Buddhist world, Tara is known as the Liberator, helping beings overcome fear, obstacles and suffering.

Among her many forms, Green Tara is especially revered for her swift compassionate action.

She symbolises the willingness to help others without hesitation and reminds us that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.

Why We Chose the Name Tsechen Tara Trust

When we began creating the charity, we wanted a name that reflected both our Buddhist roots and our charitable mission.

Tsechen represents our commitment to great compassion.

Tara represents putting that compassion into action.

Together, they express exactly what we hope to achieve.

Helping vulnerable people.

Supporting communities.

Promoting mental wellbeing.

Preserving Buddhist wisdom.

Creating opportunities for future generations.

Our name reminds us that compassion should always lead to action.

Compassion, Hope and Action

These three words have become the guiding values of Tsechen Tara Trust.

Compassion

We seek to understand the challenges others face and respond with kindness, generosity and practical support.

Hope

We believe that positive change is always possible, whether helping one individual or an entire community.

Action

Real compassion is demonstrated through what we do. Every project, every volunteer, every donation and every act of kindness has the potential to change lives.

More Than a Charity Name

For us, Tsechen Tara is also a promise.

A promise to support people with dignity.

A promise to preserve timeless Buddhist wisdom.

A promise to bring people together through kindness and community.

A promise to create lasting change, both here in the United Kingdom and in communities across Tibet, Nepal and India.

A Name That Inspires Our Future

Our long-term vision includes supporting vulnerable people, offering meditation to improve mental wellbeing and one day building a Buddhist Retreat Village where people from every background can find peace, friendship and inspiration.

Everything we hope to build begins with the meaning behind our name.

Great Compassion.

Compassionate Action.

A better future for all.

That is what Tsechen Tara Trust stands for.
